Tessa Harris (Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki)

Tessa Harris, one of our mana whenua design partners, brings forth her expertise as a weaver and multi-disciplinary artist in the mahi toi for One Queen Street. 'Ngā Tai e Whā' is a contemporary tukutuku panel utilising materials gathered from Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki ancestral lands across the islands of Te Waitematāand Tīkapa Moana (Hauraki Gulf).

The tukutuku incorporates weaving stitches that carry significance tied to the unified pūtake (narrative) underpinning the curation of this collection and is manifested in all the artworks commissioned. Aukaha are the bindings that strap the waka together and symbolise strength in unity, reflecting the convergence of whenua (land) and moana (sea), and the power of working collaboratively.

'Tūmatakahuki,' the foundational stitch, symbolise strength and stability, while 'purapura whetu' remembers loved ones passed on, fostering a connection between past and present generations. 'Pātikitiki,' representing the abundant fertility of Te Waitematā, speaks to the hospitality the hotel extends to its guests.

At the heart of the panel lies a large black diamond carved from Tāmaki Basalt, affirming the enduring connection between Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and Te Ao Kohatu - the ancient world. Surrounding the central design are black triangles crafted from stone sourced from the islands of Tīkapa Moana, resembling jewels and paying homage to the region's geological richness.

Harris utilised this project as a teaching opportunity, collaborating with her whānau to impart traditional weaving techniques and cultural knowledge to younger generations. In doing so, she embodies the essence of Aukaha, harnessing the collective strength and spirit of her iwi in creating this significant mahi toi.

One Queen Street, the Deloitte Centre, is a Precinct Properties development with architecture by Warren & Mahoney, interior design by Technē, and home to the luxury InterContinental Hotel. The One Queen Street kaupapa includes commissioned works by our four mana whenua design partners alongside works by leading contemporary artists from Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Australia.
